HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A Hillsborough sheriff’s deputy was hurt Friday afternoon when a man rammed her patrol SUV with a pickup in an attempt to evade arrest, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Stevie Hackett was responding to an RV park at 9102 Williams Road in Tampa shortly after 1 p.m. to locate a suspect involved in an aggravated battery, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The suspect, Logan Williams, 27, got into the pickup with his mother and tried to drive away, striking another car in the process. He then intentionally struck Hackett’s patrol SUV and tried to run away, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Even though our deputy was injured, she managed to get out of the car, run towards the suspect and arrest the suspect,” sheriff’s office spokesperson Carolina Montelongo said during a news conference Friday afternoon.
Hackett had a civilian employee from the sheriff’s office in her SUV at the time of the crash. Both were taken to Tampa General Hospital with head pain but were in stable condition, Montelongo said. The person in the first car that was struck was not hurt.
In addition to the aggravated battery charges, Williams is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder of law enforcement, attempted second-degree murder with a weapon, resisting arrest with and without violence, aggravated fleeing to elude and leaving the scene of a crash. He is also facing charges of driving under the influence.
His mother, Meriam Williams, 62, was also arrested on a charge of resisting an officer without violence.
The sheriff’s office released footage from Hackett’s body-worn camera that captures the moment the pickup truck slammed into her SUV.
“He just hit my car,” Hackett says in the roughly two-minute video. “I’m stuck, I can’t get out.”
Hackett maneuvers out of the SUV and chases Williams into the woods with her gun drawn. She tells him several times to get on the ground or she’ll shoot him. Williams can be heard saying “you have no right” and demanding an attorney before he eventually lies down on the ground.
As another deputy struggles to handcuff him, Williams says he’s cooperating and that he has a right to know what he did wrong.
“You just crashed your car into me,” Hackett says.
“First of all I was fleeing, I was so scared for my life,” Williams says as the video ends.
The sheriff’s office said Hackett has been with the agency for two years and two months.
“We are so glad and so grateful that what happened today didn’t become a nightmare,” Montelongo said. “That our deputy was able to get out of the car, that she had minor injuries, and that she was able also to arrest the suspect.”
Sheriff Chad Chronister lauded Hackett for her “determination and courage.”
“Despite being intentionally targeted, she remained focused and ensured that this dangerous criminal was arrested, protecting our community from further harm,” Chronister said in a statement issued by the sheriff’s office Friday night. “This incident highlights the risks our deputies face every day. A dangerous individual is now off the streets thanks to their quick actions.”
Editor’s note: A previous version of this story misspelled the name of Logan Williams’ mother. Her name is Meriam Williams.
