LUFKIN, Texas — Police dash camera video and 911 audio show a unique Texas animal encounter: a kangaroo hopping across a dirt road, KSAT reported.

“There’s a kangaroo that came up the road and crossed right here,” a 911 caller told dispatchers, saying that he was unable to contact animal control.

“Does it look like it might belong there?” the bewildered dispatcher asked before sharing a laugh with the caller.

“My wife [said] ‘What’s that dog doing, standing in the middle of the road?’…and I looked and I’m like, ‘That’s a freaking kangaroo,’” the caller said.

Video shows Lufkin Police Department cruisers driving down a one-way dirt road before the kangaroo suddenly hopped across the road right in front of them.

According to the police department, an officer made contact with the kangaroo’s owner and determined the gate was left open by accident. The kangaroo was safely returned to its home.

“No wallabies were harmed in his safe return back to his residence after a Sunday stroll through the surrounding neighborhood,” according to the officer’s call notes.
