EL CAJON, Calif. — A police officer who was shot in the head during a shootout was able to sit up and talk yesterday, his colleagues said.

Jarred Slocum, 28, underwent surgery Sunday night at Sharp Memorial Hospital, and his family has been at his bedside as he recovers, Detective Kevin Maxwell said. He had been in critical condition for two days.

Slocum was filmed being dragged to safety by fellow officer Tim McFarland after collapsing from a gunshot wound, struck his forehead and fractured his skull, according to the Associated Press.

“We are incredibly grateful for the love and support from the El Cajon Police Department and the community,” wife Kelly Slocum said.
