Police1 Staff Report
(GAITHERSBURG, Md.) -- A Rockville police officer’s condition has been stabilized and he is expected to recover after being stabbed repeatedly by a broken bottle while trying to break up a fight on Nov. 23, according to police.
Officer John Ferguson was airlifted to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center on Thursday where he underwent surgery for stab wounds to his chest and back after he intervened in an argument outside Buffalo Billiards in Gaithersburg, Montgomery County Police told Police1.com.
At about 1:30 a.m. an argument moved from the billiards hall to a parking lot at the corner of South Summit Ave. and East Diamond Lane, police said.
Ferguson identified himself as a police officer and tried to calm the situation, police said.
Instead the officer was hit in the back of the head with a beer bottle and then set upon by three men at which time he was stabbed with what police said appeared to be a broken beer bottle.
The three men attempted to flee the scene in a pick-up truck, grazing a county officer who had responded to a call about the fight. The men then ran a red light and rammed into a police cruiser, according to authorities.
Troy Lee English, 28, Richard Keith Oden Jr., 26 and Richard Chance Campbell, 24, were arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.
They were taken to the Montgomery County Detention Center.
