The New York Times

Jersey City, N.J. - A Jersey City police officer shot and killed a man who struck the officer with his truck during a traffic stop last night, the police said. The police officer had minor injuries.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at the intersection of Newark Avenue and Coles Street, the police said.

The officer, a nine-year veteran of the department whose name was not released by the police, had pulled over a black Ford-150 pickup truck that did not have license plates, the police said. The man drove away, striking the officer, who stood nearby, the police said.

Officials said that the officer fell to the ground but fired several shots from his service weapon, hitting the pickup and the driver, whose name was not released. The truck crashed, and two passengers ran. One was under arrest last night. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
