LVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. — A Hamburg Township man underwent emergency surgery Sunday after taking a knife to his own neck during a traffic stop.

Deputies from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office had attempted to pull over the 39-year-old man around 1 p.m. Jan. 12 near Pickney and Coon Lake roads in Marion Township, south of Howell, after they discovered he was wanted on a felony warrant, according to a release from the department.

The man fled before pulling onto a side road with police behind him, video posted by the department shows. The driver then hit a tree, causing his vehicle to turn 180 degrees.

When deputies approached the vehicle, they found the driver with self-inflicted knife wounds to his neck, police said.

Police removed the man from the car and performed life-saving measures, including wound packing and trauma bandaging, until medical personnel arrived, police said. The man was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office was aided by crews from the Livingston County EMS, Howell Area Fire Department, Michigan State Police, City of Brighton Police Department, Green Oak Charter Township Police Department, Hamburg Township Public Safety Department, as well as Washtenaw County agencies.
