Utah officer pays bill after someone ‘prank calls’ large order at restaurant

Officer Danny Christiansen said he purchased the unclaimed order to show support for a small business during the COVID-19 pandemic

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Owners of a Vietnamese restaurant who received a prank call order for $100 were pleasantly surprised when the police officer responding to the restaurant’s call purchased the order.

Tammy Nguy, who works at Sumo restaurant with her parents, the restaurant’s owners, told FOX13 a customer called in a $100 order earlier this week – an order that made up half of the restaurant’s earnings that day.

When the order was ready, Nguy said the person who ordered the food wouldn’t answer their calls.

“We tried calling them on the restaurant phone and they started blocking it,” she said. “I tried calling from the manager line and they said, ‘Oh yeah, we’re going to come and pick up that order’.”

But they never came. Nguy told FOX13 she then called the police.

Officer Danny Christiansen answered the call. He told FOX13 he knew there was no way he could find the prank caller, but he did know another way to help: purchasing the order of fresh sushi rolls for his coworkers.

“It was just upsetting to know they had prepared all this food that was never going to get paid for,” he told FOX13. “I was able to provide some meals for some of my coworkers. ... It felt good and it helped me go about my day with a lot better of an attitude.”

For the Nguys, it meant their restaurant would remain open through the pandemic another day.

“I want to thank (Christiansen) from the bottom of my heart,” Tammy Nguy told FOX13. “He has definitely helped a small business see much more faith.”
