Doug Shoemaker is a 33-year veteran of policing, having recently retired after serving as chief of police for the Denton (Texas) Police Department. Before his appointment in Texas, he was chief of police for the Grand Junction (Colorado) Police Department for 4½ years, and before that he spent nearly 27 years with the Jefferson City (Missouri) Police Department. His passion lies in strong community involvement through police-public partnerships and working to develop healthy organizational cultures through empowerment, resilience and growth.
Doug was elected as the 5th Vice President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and rose to the position of 3rd VP before his retirement. He also served in several roles with the IACP, and currently serves as the Co-Chair for the Human and Civil Rights Committee. He has an extensive history of involvement in community-based organizations, including the United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs, Children’s Advocacy Center and chambers of commerce.
He holds a bachelor of arts in English literature, a master of science in criminal justice and a doctorate in organizational leadership. He is also a Founding Board Member of The Curve, a collaborative initiative with renowned author and speaker Simon Sinek, with the goal to change the way we look at police leadership training and culture.
Doug currently works for Peregrine Technologies, a San Francisco-based software company, as a Public Safety Executive.
