Video: Police drone shows person, dog rescued from icy lake

After the dog fell through the ice, the owner tried to rescue it before also falling through

WELLESLEY, Mass. — A person and their dog were rescued Sunday after falling into the icy Lake Waban on Wellesley College.

Around 4:44 on Jan. 12, officials got a 911 call that a dog had fallen in the icy lake. The owner tried to rescue the dog before they also fell through the ice, the video shared by the Wellesley Police Department states. They person and the dog were next to a boat and far away from shore. They were unable to make it back on their own.

Officials were able to save the person before turning back into the icy waters to save the dog named Tommy.

The owner was taken to to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. And the dog was taken by police cruiser to a local vet to be treated for hypothermia, the police department said.

The department shared a video taken by drone of the rescue.

“Even in the coldest weather, the only truly safe ice is at a skating rink,” the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services previously wrote on X.
