LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — Investigators are re-examining the 2008 death of a woman as police search for her former boyfriend, escaped inmate Casey White.

According to News 19, the death of 31-year-old Christy Shelton, who was shot to death with a sawed off shotgun, was ruled a suicide. White was dating Shelton at the time and he was at the home when she died.

White is currently the subject of a manhunt after escaping the Lauderdale County Detention Center, where he was serving a 75-year prison sentence for a 2015 crime spree and awaiting trial on a capital murder case. Assistant Director of Corrections Vicky White is suspected of aiding White in the escape and is also being searched for by police.

White was awaiting trial after confessing in 2020 to the killing of 59-year-old Connie Ridgeway in 2015. That confession spurred Shelton’s daughter, Somer Mitchell, to request investigators to take another look at her mother’s death. In the wake of White’s escape, Mitchell took to TikTok in a viral video to draw more attention to the death of her mother.

Police are in communication with Shelton’s family as they review the case.
