ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A man has been arrested in connection with a scare at Albuquerque City Hall involving a possible shooter and hostage situation that police now believe was a hoax.
Daniel Olguin, 28, was being held Tuesday on suspicion of breaking and entering and false imprisonment after a floor-by-floor search of City Hall.
Olguin has no previous criminal history in Bernalillo County, Albuquerque police spokesman Tanner Tixier said.
Authorities did not immediately know if Olguin had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
SWAT teams in tactical gear surrounded City Hall on Monday and closed part of downtown after receiving reports of a possible shooter.
Employees had reported a man was running up and down the halls yelling that there was a shooter in the building.
No injuries were reported, and officers escorted employees from the building.
Police said Olguin entered the city treasurer’s office on the first floor of City Hall at about 5:30 p.m., gaining access by sliding through the narrow customer service window.
Once inside the office, Olguin confronted two female employees and told them someone was outside shooting, police said.
Based on his demeanor and the fact that he had to squeeze through the small window to get in, the employees perceived it as a valid threat, authorities said.
Both employees barricaded themselves in an office and called 911.
About six minutes later, Olguin also called 911 and indicated there was an active shooter situation in City Hall, police said.
Police said Olguin was located and arrested about 45 minutes after the first 911 call was received.
