OAKLAND, Calif. — California law enforcement agencies are increasingly turning to Tesla vehicles as valuable sources of evidence in criminal investigations, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
These electric cars, equipped with advanced external cameras, have become essential tools for officers seeking to capture crucial video footage from crime scenes, according to the report.
In recent months, Oakland police have sought court orders to tow Teslas in at least three separate incidents. These cases typically involve the cars’ “Sentry Mode,” a feature that uses cameras and sensors to monitor and record activity around the vehicle when it is locked and unattended. The footage is stored on a USB drive inside the car, making it a potential goldmine for investigators, according to the report.
Teslas do not always record crimes that occur nearby; if the car is not in “Sentry Mode” or if the cameras are not triggered, there will not be any useful footage, according to the report.
In a case on July 13, Oakland police obtained a search warrant to tow a Tesla Model X after a fatal shooting outside a beauty supply shop. The vehicle’s cameras recorded the incident, and the footage played a role in charging two suspects with murder, according to the report.
