SHREVEPORT, La. — A K-9 with the Shreveport Police Department died from a heat-related injury while searching for a suspect, KTBS reports.
K-9 handler Sergeant Jeff Hammer and his partner, K-9 Harrie, were helping officers search for suspects who fled from a stolen vehicle following a pursuit.
K-9 Harrie received a heat-related injury while searching for the suspects and was rushed to an emergency clinic, but ultimately died due to his injuries.
K-9 Harrie was a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois. He joined the Shreveport Police Department in January 2018.
At one point in his career, police thought K-9 Harrie was a “lost cause,” but he was assigned to Hammer, who has been a longtime K-9 handler and animal lover.
With help from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Department K-9 trainers, Hammer turned K-9 Harrie into a fantastic K-9 partner who started assisting in the training of other police K-9s.
K-9 Harrie became a highly sought-after K-9 in the area.
