FOREST HEIGHTS, Md. — A K-9 with the Forest Heights Police Department died due to a medical emergency while assisting a partner agency, the department announced.

On July 2, K-9 Kuno was helping the Prince George’s County Police Department search a school for a burglary suspect with temperatures in the mid-90s.

About 15 minutes into the search, K-9 Kuno showed signs of heat stroke, according to Officer Down Memorial Page. His handler, A/Sgt. Grooms, took K-9 Kuno to the patrol unit to cool down and give him water, but he collapsed several minutes later.

He was rushed to a veterinarian where he died.

K-9 Kuno was the original, longest-standing K-9 with the Forest Heights Police Department.

“This incident is being treated as a line-of-duty death. We extend our thoughts and prayers to A/Sgt. Grooms and the entire Forest Heights Police Department,” police said in a statement.
