Calling all police poets! Police1’s poetry column highlights some of the inspirational, moving and funny poems authored by our readers.
This poem is by Rashelle Hintz, who has been a police wife for 16 years.
“My husband has had the privilege of handling two K9s,” writes Rashelle. “I wrote this poem as I contemplated the fascinating bond between a working dog and their handler. The mutual trust between an officer and their K9 partner is both a reassurance and a responsibility felt by handlers. K9s model devotion and sacrifice impeccably, and I can’t help but feel grateful to witness and experience this firsthand.”

K-9
Another pair of eyes always watching out for me
Things I fail to notice you never fail to see
You trust me like no other
I put my trust in you
You’re more than just a dog, you’re my brother,
My brother in blue
As we walk this path together
Facing dangers day by day
For now and for forever
For your safety do I pray
Your courage is admired by all including me
Knowing the call of duty isn’t always free
My safety over yours is your driving call
Lost without the other if one of us should fall
Always close to me an inseparable pair
Only for each other a bond beyond compare.
