LOS ANGELES — Nearly $4 million in stolen merchandise has been recovered following a significant cargo theft investigation by the LAPD, KABC reported.
Two suspects were arrested in connection with the theft, transport and resale of stolen cargo throughout the Los Angeles area. Both are alleged members of a South American theft group.
The arrests followed multiple search warrants executed at storage facilities in the San Fernando Valley. Investigators with LAPD’s Commercial Crimes Division – Cargo Theft Unit recovered over $1.2 million in stolen goods, including high-value items such as tequila, electronics, clothing, pet food and personal care products.
Additionally, authorities intercepted a stolen shipment of bitcoin mining computers valued at approximately $2.7 million at Los Angeles International Airport, just before the items were to be shipped to Hong Kong.
One suspect was arrested for receiving stolen property, cited and released. The other man was taken into custody on a no-bail warrant and remains in custody at Van Nuys Jail.
The investigation was a joint effort involving LAPD, Los Angeles Port Police, Union Pacific Railroad Police and L.A. Airport Police, according to the report.
“This case highlights the ongoing collaborative efforts among law enforcement agencies to combat cargo theft and protect the integrity of commercial transport operations,” LAPD said in a statement. Authorities noted the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests may be made.
