DALLAS — A Dallas police officer was fired today after an internal investigation concluded that she violated the department’s deadly force policy when she shot a 19-year-old carjacking suspect.
Senior Cpl. Amy Wilburn was among several other police officers facing disciplinary hearings before Police Chief David Brown. She lost her job in connection with the Dec. 9 shooting of Kelvion Walker.
An independent witness has said the officer shot Walker even though he had both hands in the air and showed no signs of having a weapon.
Wilburn’s attorney, Robert Rogers, has previously said that the shooting was justified.
“Without getting into the specifics of an ongoing investigation, I can promise you that the officer involved was in fear for her life at that exact moment,” Rogers said.
But an internal investigation determined that Wilburn fired her weapon “upon an unarmed person without fear or justification.” Police have said no weapon was found in the car.
As with all the officers terminated today, Wilburn can appeal her firing under civil service rules.
