JOLIET, Ill. — Illinois State trooper was fatally struck Monday night while removing debris from Interstate Highway 55 , according to a news release.

Shortly before 9:45 p.m., Trooper Clay M. Carns was on southbound I-55 near West Blodgett Road. Carns, of Orland Park, was attempting to clear debris from the roadway when he was hit by a vehicle, officials said.

Illinois state police said Carns, 35, was near Channahon when he was struck. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet where he died from his injuries, said ISP director Brendan F. Kelly.

Carns had worked 11 years as a trooper. He is survived by a wife, two children and his parents.

Illinois State police were investigating the crash. No further information was immediately available.
