BENTONVILLE, Ark. — An Arkansas police detective was killed last weekend after his motorcycle was struck by a truck while serving as a police escort for a Wreaths Across America event.
According to KNWA News, Paul Daniel Newell, 51, was one of several law enforcement officers escorting three large trucks carrying holiday wreaths to a veteran cemetery in Fayetteville when he was involved in the deadly crash.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Facebook confirming the death of Detective Newell.
“It is with profound sadness that Benton County Sheriff Shawn Holloway announces the on-duty tragic death of Detective Paul Daniel Newell of Gravette Arkansas. Detective Newell was involved in a traffic accident early Saturday morning while escorting the Wreath Across America procession through Bentonville Arkansas, an organization that provides wreaths to Veterans Cemeteries across America,” the post stated.
Detective Newell began his law enforcement career 24 years ago in the detention division of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and later went on to graduate from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training academy. Throughout his tenure, he served as a patrol deputy, patrol sergeant, training sergeant, lieutenant, and most recently, detective assigned to the criminal investigation division.
