WALLA WALLA, Wash. — A Walla Walla police officer died Wednesday of medical complications.

The department announced the death of Officer Nicholas Henzel, 35, “with great sadness and an extremely heavy heart.”

Henzel served with the U.S. Air Force before he joined the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy in 2006, The Union-Bulletin reported. In 2012, he joined the Walla Walla Police Department.

In addition to his military and law enforcement work, he was a volunteer wrestling coach and served with the Fraternal Order of Police “Cops and Kids” program.

Henzel is survived by his wife and two children.
