Calif. deputy killed, cruiser torn in half in crash during pursuit

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., a six-year law enforcement veteran, was described as a dedicated officer and father

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was killed after his patrol car crashed into another vehicle and struck a light pole during a pursuit, ABC News reported.

The pursuit began around 11 a.m. on March 17 when deputies attempted to stop a suspected stolen vehicle in Victorville, according to the report. The driver had failed to yield, prompting a pursuit.

Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., a six-year law enforcement veteran, crashed near El Evado and Seneca roads, colliding with a bystander’s car before hitting a light pole. The impact split his vehicle in half, according to the report. Cuevas died at the scene, while the other driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver continued fleeing before stopping and attempting to escape on foot. He was quickly apprehended and later booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading a peace officer causing death or serious injury, according to the report.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus described Cuevas as a dedicated officer and father.

“He was a grand and great protector,” Dicus said.

Law enforcement agencies held a procession to honor Cuevas as his body was transported to the county coroner’s office, according to the report. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
