WASHINGTON — A special police officer died after she was shot during a training session led by a retired police lieutenant at the Anacostia Library in D.C. on Thursday.
The baton training session was being conducted by Jesse Porter, who retired two years ago from the Metropolitan Police Department, in the lower level of the library when the incident occurred, WJLA.com reported. Toward the end of the training, the retired officer fired a shot that struck the officer in the room, according to D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee.
“It’s a very tragic situation,” Contee said during a news conference. “I don’t have answers as to why the live firearm was at the training.”
The female special police officer for the library, identified as 25-year-old Maurica Manyan, was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. Porter has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, FOX5DC.com reported.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
