Ind. officer shot during pursuit dies

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said Cpl. Brandon Schreiber was an organ donor and that his “sacrifice will present the opportunity for him to help many other people”

The incident began when the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the Illinois State Police for an officer-involved shooting investigation. According to preliminary reports, officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department were pursuing an armed suspect who was holding a hostage.

URBANA, Ill. — A sheriff’s corporal with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office has died a week after he was shot, WCIA reported.

Brandon Schreiber died at a hospital on Sept. 11, according to the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office said Schreiber was an organ donor and that his “sacrifice will present the opportunity for him to help many other people.” Following his death, Schreiber’s body was honored in a memorial procession, according to the report.

“Our hearts are heavy today as we honor a man who has made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community,” said Champaign Police Chief Timothy Tyler. “We mourn his loss, grieve for his department and his family, and pay our respects.”

Schreiber was shot on Sept. 1 while assisting the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois during the pursuit of an armed suspect holding a hostage, according to WAND. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit as it crossed into Indiana. The suspect returned to Illinois and crashed. Upon exiting the car, the suspect engaged in a gunfire exchange, resulting in Schreiber being struck.

During the exchange, both the suspect and Schreiber were struck. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

Schreiber had served with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department for five years.
