LOS ANGELES, Calif. — An investigation has been launched into the cause of death of a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy who died unexpectedly at the South L.A. sheriff’s station, FOX 11 reported.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that an ambulance was called to the station around 4 p.m. on April 28 for an unresponsive deputy, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. Deputy Jonathan Stewart, 41, had been with the LASD since 2006, starting his career as a custody assistant and later serving as a field training officer.
“Jonathan dedicated a decade serving the South Los Angeles community, he was respected and highly regarded by his peers and supervisors for his unwavering commitment,” the LASD stated. “Our @lasdhq family is mourning the loss of a valued member of our family, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and partners during this difficult time.”
Stewart is survived by a wife and three children, according to the report. Following his death, a procession was held from the sheriff’s station to the medical examiner’s office in Boyle Heights. The details of a memorial service have yet to be announced.
The exact cause of Stewart’s death is still under investigation, with the case currently marked as “open” on the website of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
