COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — An officer has died days after being hit by a pickup truck.

Officer Dale Woods, 46, was responding to a crash outside of his police cruiser when he was struck by the truck. He was in “very critical condition” since the incident on Friday, local news station WLWT reports.

Sources say Woods was on life support before he died.

“We weren’t ready to let Dale go,” Police Chief Mark Denney said at a news conference.

Woods was an organ donor, which is no surprise to Denney since he said he was always helping others and served the community in many ways. He worked in fire departments before he became an officer and also worked as a dog warden for the SPCA.

“The death of Colerain Township Police Officer Dale Woods is not only a tragedy for the community he served, it is also a heartbreaking loss that all Ohioans share,” Gov John Kashich tweeted. “We will be lowering the flags in his honor.”

Cincinnati police are still unclear of what caused the driver to hit Woods. An investigation is underway and details of the initial crash are expected to start emerging in coming days.
