PHOENIX — An officer with the Phoenix Police Department has died from injuries he sustained during a shooting, the department said in a statement.
Officer Zane Coolidge was critically wounded in a shooting on Sept. 3, the department said during a news conference. He died from his injuries on Sept. 6.
Coolidge was a five-year veteran of the department. He was assigned to the field training squad in the Mountain View Precinct.
“Since Tuesday night’s shooting, Officer Coolidge put up a valiant fight, despite the odds being against him,” Interim Chief of Police Michael G. Sullivan said in a statement. “He has been surrounded by loved ones and blanketed in the prayers of this community. The injuries he sustained after the cowardly acts of another were just too much for him to overcome. Officer Coolidge’s legacy will forever be a part of this Department.”
The shooting happened on Sept. 3 when Coolidge and his partner, Officer Matthew Haney, responded to a call about a man trying to break into a vehicle, according to the city of Phoenix. Upon arrival, they encountered the suspect who fled the scene on foot.
During the pursuit, the suspect opened fire, striking both officers. Coolidge suffered critical injuries, while Haney was saved from serious harm by his ballistic vest, city officials said. Haney was treated and released from the hospital on Sept. 4.
