BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — A devoted sheriff’s sergeant — a dad to three young kids — was killed in a hit-and-run in South Carolina, deputies said.

Sgt. Devon Lindsay, 26, also was expecting a fourth child when he died on his way to work Monday, Nov. 4, according to loved ones and a news release from the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

“This unfortunate accident was preventable and we are mourning the loss of our co-worker,” Sheriff Duane Lewis of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.

The crash was reported just before 5 a.m. on S.C. Highway 27 in Ridgeville, a roughly 40-mile drive northwest from Charleston. Lindsay was riding a motorcycle when a Toyota driver struck his bike and left the scene, the S.C. Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Now, a woman accused of being behind the wheel of the Toyota was charged with “hit and run leaving the scene of a collision involving death,” state troopers said. No attorney information was listed in online case records for the woman, identified as 30-year-old Jessica Ann Goodwin of Harleyville.

Meanwhile, Lindsay is remembered as a sergeant who had been on the Berkeley County force since 2019. He most recently worked at the Hill-Finklea jail.

“I can’t tell you how many times we’d be in public, and someone that he knew from the inside would come up and say, ‘I followed your advice’ and ‘I’m staying out of trouble, and I got that job, I was hoping for,” his widow, Jazmin Lindsay, told WCBD.

Jazmin Lindsay, who has known her husband since they were 12 years old, told the TV station he always struck up conversations with their neighbors. He had just left for work when he was involved in the crash near their home, according to a Facebook post and a GoFundMe page that said it’s raising money for the family.

“If you cared...you would have stopped,” Jazmin Lindsay wrote on Facebook. “But you didn’t. You took my whole world from me and fled because what?...you were scared? Of the consequences?”

Goodwin was denied bond, and her next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 10 . The crash was under investigation as of Nov. 5, WCIV reported.

The Facebook user believed to be Devon Lindsay’s widow didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment on Nov. 8.

“He was a dedicated member of our agency and served his community well,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Facebook post, adding that he was “taken from this world too soon.”
