GREENVILLE, Texas — A Greenville police officer was fatally shot while pursuing a suspect on foot, marking the city’s first line-of-duty death in more than a century, FOX 4 reported.

Officer Cooper Dawson had stopped a vehicle shortly before 8 p.m. on Nov. 25 when the driver fled on foot, according to the report. Dawson gave chase and followed the suspect into a wooded area behind nearby homes. According to the Greenville Police Department, the suspect ambushed Dawson and shot him multiple times.

“Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson displayed exceptional courage, returning fire, and striking the suspect,” Greenville police said in a statement.

Both Dawson and the suspect were transported to the hospital, according to the report. Dawson, who had sustained gunshot wounds to his leg and side, was airlifted to a different hospital, where he later died.

“We are heartbroken over the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly put his life on the line to serve and protect our community,” Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith said in a statement. “We ask that you keep Officer Dawson’s family, our department, and the Greenville community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

Officer Dawson was described as a highly respected member of the department and had previously served with the Garland Police Department, according to the report. Details about the suspect’s identity and condition have not yet been released. The incident remains under investigation.
