KINSTON, N.C. — Investigator Warren Lewis was shot and killed while serving a murder warrant with the Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force at approximately 7:00 pm Thursday.

U.S. Marshal Service spokeswoman Nikki Credic identified the deputy shot Thursday night as part of an agency task force that included local and federal officers, according to an Associated Press article.

Nash County Sheriff Dick Jenkins said the victim was a 9-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. The Wilson Daily Times quoted Jenkins as saying that the task force was serving a homicide warrant at a Kinston home when the shooting occurred.

Credic says that some suspects were in custody. Five people, including three wanted in connection with the original murder warrant, were arrested following a standoff lasting half an hour.

Investigators could be seen going in and out of the taped-off crime scene after the shooting happened.

ODMP reports that Investigator Lewis was a sworn Deputy United States Marshal assigned to the Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force. He had served with the Nash County Sheriff’s Office for nine years and is survived by his wife and two children.
