FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — A New York State Trooper who claimed he was shot while on duty has surrendered to police, facing multiple charges related to the incident, WABC reported.
Thomas Mascia, 27, turned himself in to authorities on Jan. 27 at the State Police Troop L barracks in Farmingdale, according to the report. Mascia faces charges of tampering with evidence, falsifying documents and official misconduct stemming from his alleged false report of being shot while on duty in October 2024.
Mascia reported that he had been shot in the right kneecap after he stopped to check on a stranded motorist, The Times Union reported. He was allegedly suspended after refusing to submit to a drug test, and he resigned from his position on Jan. 24.
Mascia’s parents also surrendered to police after being charged with criminal possession of a firearm in connection with the investigation, according to the report. Law enforcement sources told The Times Union that during a search of Mascia’s residence, which he shared with his parents, investigators seized cash and numerous firearms. Among the firearms was a .22 caliber ghost gun that is being investigated as having been used at the scene of the alleged shooting.
