MILWAUKEE — All Milwaukee police stations will soon be outfitted with bullet-resistant glass, Milwaukee Police announced on Tuesday. The move comes after a February shooting when a man walked into the District 5 station and opened fire on the officers and citizens inside. Police returned fire and took the suspect into custody without further incident. No one was injured.
In a Facebook post, police said the bullet-resistant glass was a direct response to that incident.
“In response to this incident, the Milwaukee Police Department immediately explored options to improve its police district station safety by examining national best practices, surveying its employees, and reaching out to community members and elected officials,” Milwaukee Police wrote on Facebook. “Based on feedback and overwhelming community support, MPD is moving forward with installing bullet-resistant glass at its police districts.”
The $260,000 project is funded by private donations from a former county leader, local businesses and the Milwaukee Police Foundation.
“I thank the Police Foundation and the people who have stepped up for their concern and their generosity,” said Cavalier Johnson, the mayor of Milwaukee. “To make Milwaukee safer, the best way forward is with partnerships. This effort is a solid example of such a partnership.”
The new glass will be installed throughout the spring, police said.
