LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Police Department has released bodycam video from a standoff with a parolee who shot three officers in March.
Officers had responded to a call reporting a wanted parolee, Jonathan Magana, when the suspect failed to comply with their commands and barricaded himself inside a garage, Fox 11 reported.
During the standoff officers made several announcements calling for Magana to surrender, but he refused. A chemical agent was deployed, and Magana then began shooting at officers.
Three officers were wounded during the gunfight. One officer was shot in the arm, another in the leg, and a third was shot in the torso, believed to be deflected off body armor. The officers were removed to a safe location where they received medical treatment.
SWAT deployed a robot with a camera and after entering the garage found Magana was wounded. He was later pronounced dead on the scene.
Magana had a lengthy criminal record. In January he was charged with battery on a police officer and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person in connection with an incident in 2022. He posted bond and was released after but failed to show up for his arraignment hearing.
