KUSEL, Germany — Authorities have arrested two men suspected of killing a pair of police officers on a rural road in western Germany, The Guardian reported on Monday.
Police in Kaiserslautern, a small city 73 miles southwest of Frankfurt, said the shooting happened just after 4 a.m. at a traffic checkpoint. According to The Guardian, the officers had reported seeing dead game in the car prior to the shooting.
The suspects were arrested later that evening after a manhunt. The officers were identified as a 24-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man. The woman was still a student at the police academy, officials said.
The shootings have stunned the country, with German interior minister Nancy Faeser describing the incident as “an execution.”
“Irrespective of what the motive behind this deed is, this deed bears the hallmarks of an execution, and shows that police officers risk their lives for our safety every day,” Faeser said in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing.
