TURKEY CREEK, La. — A Louisiana police chief was critically injured after being stabbed in the face during an arrest.

On Tuesday night, Turkey Creek Chief Robert Glen Leggett was attempting to arrest 24-year-old Zackery Shane Deville for trespassing when the suspect fought the chief, KATC reports. Police said Deville brandished a knife and stabbed Leggett across the left cheek.

Police said Leggett was “critically injured” in the attack and underwent emergency surgery. The chief is currently in the ICU.

Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested Deville, who was booked on attempted first-degree murder and criminal trespassing charges.

Mayor Heather Cloud said in a statement that drugs “appeared to be involved” and that the sheriff’s department is investigating the incident.

“The Village of Turkey Creek is grateful to God for preserving our Chief’s life and we ask for continued prayers for our Chief, his family and our Village,” Cloud said.
