“Pat and squeeze” search tips

When searching a prisoner, remember these key points: Pat and squeeze, do not slide your hand. Sliding your hand will allow any sharp or pointed items to pierce your skin. Pat and squeeze will allow you to detect hazardous items before they injure you.

Check seams of clothing. Several brands (and home made items) have pockets concealed in the seams. There are also hidden areas in many shoes and other articles of clothing. Search and remove all items from your prisoner prior to transportation. There are many instances of jewelry being modified for use as a handcuff key, weapons being hidden in unusual items and contraband being more thoroughly hidden during transport. These all pose a risk to you, as well as other officers your prisoner comes in contact with.

Also, have the prisoner face away from you while you are searching him. This will give you time to respond if they decide to spit on you, or turn and become assaultive. In the name of speeding up the process, I have seen many officers put themselves at risk by not conducting a proper search. Keep your name, and your partner’s name, off that wall. Conduct a safe and thorough search of every one you transport.
