A Philadelphia Highway Patrol Officer was critically injured Thursday night after being hit by another vehicle on his motorcycle.

Officer Andy Chan is in critical but stable condition following brain surgery needed after the crash, ABC 6 Action News reports. Doctors are conducting minute-by-minute “aggressive monitoring” on Chan’s condition. There hasn’t been much change in Chan’s status, but the next 72 hours are crucial.

“It’s good news in the sense that there’s not a lot of change. Because of the significant injury that he sustained, that’s actually a good sign right now,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.

Chan was transported to a local hospital with a large police escort after the crash. His wife and son are with him.
