San Francisco police union asks for apology from 49ers, NFL

The association sent a letter to the NFL and the 49ers asking for an apology for Colin Kaepernick’s comments

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Police Officers Association wants an apology from the NFL and the 49ers.

Following 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s comments about police brutality in America and his protest against the national anthem, the SFPOA believes Kaepernick is misinformed about the law enforcement profession and his statements are ill-conceived.

SFPOA President Martin Halloran sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the President and CEO of the 49ers Jed York asking for an apology.

“While we certainly acknowledge Mr. Kaepernick’s first amendment right to remain seated during the National Anthem, as inappropriate as that may be, we will not stand by while he attacks police officers in this country with statements such as, ‘People are on paid leave while people of color are killed,’” the letter reads.

The letter asks for the NFL and the 49ers team to denounce Kaepernick’s statements and separate themselves from his actions.

The association also extended an open invitation to Kaepernick and any NFL player to visit and train at the SFPD Academy.
