NEW ORLEANS — After her sister was fatally injured in the line of duty last year, one woman decided to continue her family’s legacy of service with the New Orleans Police Department.

The Times-Picayune reports that Jacquen Hunter graduated from the agency Friday, becoming the fourth Hunter sister to serve in the department. Hunter said she felt the support of her sister Natasha, who was killed after being struck by a drunken motorist, throughout her journey of becoming an officer.

“I was the last person to talk to her the night of the accident,” Hunter said in a video posted on the NOPD website. “The last thing I told her was to be safe.”

After losing her sister, Hunter, who was a corrections officer at the time, said the loss gave her pause as to whether or not she wanted to continue her career in law enforcement. But after some self-reflection, she knew a career in LE was what she was meant to do.

Hunter said she knows her sister would celebrate if she was still around today.

“I know she’s looking down, I know she’s proud,” Hunter said.
