HOUSTON — Authorities in Houston are being commended for their use of force caught on tape when a man resisted arrest in a mall parking lot, FOX 26 reported.
The incident began when mall security flagged down the suspect because he was acting strangely. Police told the news site the suspect may have been on drugs and was TASERed several times after becoming aggressive.
The incident was caught on video and posted on Facebook by a witness Cheryl Collier. The video has over a million views since its posting on Saturday.
“It wasn’t a racial issue,” Collier told the news site. “The cop pleaded with the guy. He didn’t want that blood on his hands and he really was trying to diffuse the situation the best way, and I commend the officer.”
Precinct Four Constable Mark Herman told the news site he is very happy with the way officers handled the situation. He said force is almost necessary in this type of situation that officers encounter everyday.
Collier agreed with their response and posted the video to show the officers did the right thing.
“All officers are not bad, and if you see something going on or whatever, if the officer tells you to do something, just comply with what they’re saying, even if you in the right or the wrong,” Collier said in her interview.
The suspect was charged with aggravated assault on an officer with no bond. A use of force review board with review the incident.
