BRYAN, Texas — Police released footage Wednesday of the Feb. 13 shooting of a man who wouldn’t show his right hand and was taunting an officer.

Officer Steven Laughlin responded to a disturbance call after a woman called police and told them she had a protective order against her ex-boyfriend, who was at her home and refused to leave. As Laughlin arrived and spoke with the ex-girlfriend, the suspect, Calvin Baker, returned to the scene and refused to talk to Laughlin, KAGS reported.

Laughlin repeatedly asked Baker to show him his right hand, but Baker refused, leading Laughlin to believe he had a weapon, according to KBTX. Baker can be heard in footage of the incident asking Laughlin if he “was ready” and laughing multiple times.

“Stop saying that man, all I want to do is talk to you man,” Laughlin said.

Baker then reached into his pocket and Laughlin told him again to show his hands.

Police told KBTX Baker removed a black object from his pocket and Laughlin fired five shots, wounding Baker. He was taken to a local hospital where he made a full recovery.

According to KBTX, the Bryan Police Department, Texas Rangers, and the Brazos County DA investigated the shooting and found Laughlin justified in his use of force.

“I thought he responded exactly as he is trained and did a very good job in a very difficult, unexpected call,” Police Chief Eric Buske said.

KAGS reported no charges are anticipated against Baker.
