CHINO, Calif. — A knife-wielding suspect continued to advance toward a Chino Police Department before a fatal officer-involved shooting occurred, body camera video shows.

On June 24, the Chino Police Department received a 911 call from a 12-year-old girl, saying her father appeared to be assaulting her mother, the department said in a critical incident briefing released July 19.

“My dad is getting super aggressive and this isn’t the first time!” the girl told the dispatcher.

As the first police officer arrived at the apartment complex, he saw adults and children in the parking lot running away from the suspect. The daughter told the officer that her father had a knife, body camera video shows.

The responding officer immediately took a position between the bystanders and the suspect and attempted to de-escalate the situation by speaking with the suspect, the department said.

While speaking with the suspect, the officer observed a large knife in the suspect’s pocket. The officer asked the suspect to take a seat, to which the suspect responded “No, why? I haven’t done anything wrong.”

The officer gave the suspect clear, repeated commands to not grab the knife.

“Nothing has to get worse than it has to be, okay?” the officer told the suspect.

“It’s their f*****g fault!” the suspect told the officer.

The suspect then ignored the officer’s commands and pulled a large fillet knife from his pocket and advanced toward the officer, leading the officer to fire his weapon.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and officers at the scene provided medical aid. He was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries.
