YUCAIPA, Calif. — Body camera footage captured a harrowing incident where an armed man with a criminal background put a Fontana police officer in a headlock during a traffic stop, KABC reported.
The Feb. 9 stop was part of a gang operation with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, according to the report. Video released on May 9 shows one officer asking the suspect to step out of the car and wait with his partner, while he returned to the cruiser to run his driver’s license.

The video then shows the officer quickly getting out of the car when he hears his partner calling for help. The suspect can be seen putting the officer into a headlock and wrestling for her gun.
The officer being assaulted warned her partner that the man had a gun. The other officer quickly responded, shooting the suspect once. The body camera footage shows the suspect on the ground in pain before being handcuffed and taken to the hospital for his injuries.
He survived the shooting and is currently awaiting trial for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, according to the report. The suspect has a substantial criminal record, including charges for assault, carjacking, robbery and illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
