ANAHEIM, Calif.- An off-duty Los Angeles police officer who was paralyzed after being accidentally shot in the back by his young son will not face criminal charges.
Officer Enrique Chavez, a 35-year-old Anaheim resident, was struck July 11 while he was driving his pickup truck. Police say Chavez’s son was sitting in the back seat and somehow managed to get his father’s handgun and fired one shot. There have been conflicting reports about whether the son was three or four years old.
After recovering from surgery, Chavez was questioned by detectives. The case was later forwarded to prosecutors.
A D.A. spokeswoman says prosecutors decided not to file charges against Chavez “due to the totality of the circumstances and the extent of his injuries.”
