DENVER — A Denver Police Department officer was shot in the neck by a suspect who was being removed from a police cruiser at a jail Monday night.

The suspect, who had been arrested earlier in the evening after police pursued an alleged stolen vehicle and found a handgun and narcotics in the car, had a concealed weapon on him while handcuffed in the back of the cruiser, KDVR.com reported.

The suspect shot one of two officers inside the parking structure at a detention center. The officer suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was shot multiple times by at least one other officer. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The incident remains under investigation.
