DEARBORN, Mich. — A 33-year-old Dearborn man with a history of mental illness is dead after he walked into the city’s Police Department, pointed a handgun at an officer behind the front desk and attempted to shoot the officer, police said.
The officer fired multiple shots at the man, who was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
The ordeal unfolded at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday when the man walked into the north entrance of the police station and removed a concealed 9 mm pistol from his person, police said.
No one other than the gunman was harmed, police said.
The Michigan State Police is overseeing the investigation. Detectives are reviewing video surveillance and interviewing witnesses. The weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
“The motive of the suspect is unclear at this point,” MSP said in a statement on its Twitter page. “There is a history of mental illness.”
A report will be submitted to the Wayne County prosecutor to review once the investigation is complete, police said. An autopsy is being done through the county medical examiner.
The Police Department’s lobby remains closed to the public as the investigation continues. Anyone needing police assistance is asked to enter the department through the glass doors on the east side of the station, 16099 Michigan Ave. Officers are stationed at the doors to provide police services as needed.
Mayor Abdullah Hammoud shared the Police Department’s announcement of the shooting on his Facebook page, adding, “Please continue to pray for the safety of our officers and for the family of the deceased.”
