YONKERS, N.Y. — A Yonkers police officer was hospitalized Monday after he broke four vertebrae and suffered a severe concussion while on duty.

The incident began when officers responded to a call about a man waving a gun, according to PIX 11. Shots were fired and the suspect was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound to his leg, according to the report. At some point, the officer jumped over a landing and fell 10 feet. The officer, a 20-year veteran of the force, was in the intensive care unit on Monday.

Police said it wasn’t immediately clear why the officer jumped, and the investigation is ongoing. No gun was recovered from the scene, police said.
