SAN DIEGO — Following public outcry, police have released video of an officer-involved shooting of an armed suspect in downtown San Diego.

Police said 25-year-old Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra was a suspect in a robbery that occurred on June 21, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Officers attempted to make contact with Ibarra in downtown San Diego on Saturday when the shooting occurred. The incident prompted protests later that day. About 100 people showed up, calling for the San Diego Police Department to release body-worn camera footage of the incident after the PD initially released a still photo.

SDPD responded in a Twitter thread, saying, “We understand transparency is important. We are working tirelessly to gather all video evidence including body worn camera footage so that it can be released without delay.”

In an update, SDPD released the below video, comprised of footage from both a surveillance camera and BWC.

In the video, which captures multiple angles, two officers attempt to contact the suspect. The suspect starts to run, reaching into his waistband and pointing an object at the two officers. That’s when they discharge their service weapons.

The object appeared to be a loaded revolver wrapped in a bandana which officers found under the suspect’s body as he was handcuffed, SDPD told CBS8.

SDPD posted a picture of the revolver, writing, “The gun recovered at the scene has been unwrapped.”

Ibarra underwent surgery and was in the intensive care unit Sunday, according to the Tribune.

The incident will now be investigated by several outside agencies and will be monitored by the FBI and the U.S. attorney’s office, said CBS8.
