RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Police Department has released body camera footage from an encounter with an armed suspect who was holding his wife hostage, leading to a fatal officer-involved shooting, WRIC reported.

The department released video, photos and audio detailing the shooting, which took place on Oct. 15. A 911 caller, identified as the suspect’s boss, reported that the suspect was suffering a mental health episode and had threatened their employer with a knife, according to the report.

When police arrived at the 36-year-old suspect’s house, they attempted to de-escalate the situation with the man for nearly half an hour after he had reportedly taken his wife hostage and was armed with a hatchet. Officers repeatedly called for the suspect to surrender, but he responded with threats, including statements that he would harm his wife, video shows.

After the suspect repeatedly threatened both officers and his wife, officers advanced with ballistic shields, and a confrontation ensued, leading to shots being fired. The suspect later died at the hospital.

Richmond Police shared images of a hatchet recovered at the scene, along with damage to the apartment door consistent with hatchet strikes, according to the report. An investigation is ongoing, and a report will be submitted to the Commonwealth’s Attorney. The department stated it aims to enhance transparency with the release of this critical incident footage and has placed the officer who discharged his weapon on administrative leave, per policy.
