ATLANTA — A 22-year-old man was arrested Sunday after being injured in a shootout with an Atlanta police officer in Midtown the previous night, according to officials.
Atlanta police were called around 7:20 p.m. Saturday to a domestic dispute in the 700 block of Peachtree Street, where a woman said she had been in a fight with her partner, identified as Tabiaus Sheely, according to the GBI.
The woman, who had bruises on her head and chest, had asked officers to take Sheely away from her apartment, officials said. After searching the area, an officer found Sheely near the entrance to the building and approached, but he ran away, according to the state agency.
“Sheely (then) pulled out a gun and shot at the officer,” the GBI said. “The officer returned fire, hitting Sheely in the arm.”
No officers were injured during the incident. Sheely was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital and later booked into the Fulton County Jail, officials said.
He is facing charges that include aggravated assault, false imprisonment, criminal trespass, robbery by intimidation, simple battery, terroristic threats and acts, and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime, according to online records.
Last month, Sheely, of College Park, was arrested in Fulton County on charges of battery - family violence, false imprisonment, and cruelty to children, records showed. He was released from the county jail two days later.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into Saturday’s shooting. Afterward, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
It was the 46th officer-involved shooting the state agency has been asked to investigate in 2024. At the same time last year there were 57 such shootings.
