NEW YORK —The NYPD released body-worn camera footage showing an officer-involved shooting of a man who shot a bystander and pointed a gun at an officer, according to a critical incident video release.
The Dec. 5 incident began when the suspect was seen firing several shots at a person, according to the release. Surveillance footage shows the suspect climbing out of a vehicle and firing multiple shots at a person walking by on the sidewalk.

The suspect then climbed back into the passenger side of the vehicle, which sped away.
A civilian witness flagged down officers patrolling the area and gave them adescription of the vehicle, which the officers passed along to other units, according to the release. The vehicle was spotted minutes later, and officers attempted a traffic stop.
The suspect vehicle fled from the stop at high speeds, according to the release. Officers pursued the suspect for about 2.5 miles before the vehicle hit another vehicle and became disabled.
Body camera footage shows an officer approaching the vehicle as the passenger door cracks open. The officer is only feet away from the vehicle when the suspect opens the door and points a gun at the officer.
The officer fired multiple shots, striking the suspect several times. The suspect was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, according to the release.
